Most of us living Down Under - whether that's in Australia or New Zealand - will want to crawl inside at the first sign of winter and shelve those DIY projects until spring rolls around. You may want to reconsider, however, as there are many great projects you can dig into over the winter season.

However, before getting started with your outdoor DIY project, consider getting in touch with the experts at Kennards Hire - whether you're based New Zealand or Australia.

    Use pallets for great effect

What better way to put old pallets to use than through a DIY project? On top of the obvious recycling benefits, using pallets can save you quite a bit on raw materials and even labour time. Winter Gardenz recently explained how you can use pallets in a number of creative ways, including:

    • Basic pathways.
    • Small boxes for outdoor herbs.
    • Vertical gardening when space is an issue.
    • Storage for large gardening tools.

We're sure there are many more interesting ways to put pallets to use, it only requires a little creativity and some DIY know-how.

    Get planting

A winter garden is one that will continue to give you benefits throughout the year, providing fresh seasonal vegetables such as cabbage, peas and potatoes. Before reaping a harvest, however, it's important to lay out the groundwork. Any garden DIY will likely require some excavation, in order to put the correct soil in place.

If space is an issue, think about container planting (potentially using the pallets we mentioned above). This is a great way to plant vegetables on your deck, and save space.

    Plan a paving project

Lastly, there are paving projects. These are a fantastic way to make a property more accessible, as well as attractive. You might want to connect your BBQ area to the pool, or perhaps build a path through a lightly forested area of your property.

Smaller projects can involve adding stepped gardens to bring elevation to a property, or simply tidying up areas that require an overhaul. There's no shortage of projects to undertake over the colder season, so think about what you can do to give your property a refresh.

Whether you're getting your hands dirty with a winter vegetable garden or planning to lay out a stunning pathway in your backyard, remember your local Kennards Hire is on hand to help you out.
