NSW Minister for Skills John Barilaro has announced the investment of $100 million to increase training options for employers, with the aim of combating the growing shortage in skilled tradespeople. The announcement, which will support over 47,000 new training placements, was welcomed by the Housing Industry Association (HIA).

While the country as a whole is suffering from the skills shortage, NSW in particular finds itself under pressure due to the strong housing market in the state. However, Sulfianda Soeleiman, HIA acting executive director for NSW, sees an opportunity in the housing boom.

"The challenge of skills shortage also presents opportunity. It provides great potential for those that choose a construction based trade career to build significant businesses in the future,"  Mr Soeleiman commented, following the minister's statement.

Other organisations across the country are employing similar tactics to entice people into the skilled trades. The National Broadband Network (NBN) has partnered with TAFE on the $40 million Career Start workforce development program, aimed at filling a shortfall of 4,500 staff ahead of the continued roll-out of its network.

Western Australian association TradeUP Australia is working tirelessly to encourage women to consider a career in the trades, while in NSW, Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) is likewise tapping into a talent pool often overlooked for manual and skilled labour positions.

The NSW government has also announced an investment of $10 million to give school leavers the opportunity to sample pre-traineeship and apprenticeship courses, considered a "try before you buy" approach to drawing young talent into the trades.
