If you are considering renovating with some bathroom DIY, there will be many areas for your consideration including colours, shapes, styles and trends of toilets, baths, showers and accessories.

But one of the most important features of the bathroom - and perhaps one of the most practical - is your basin and cabinetry.

This feature may well be the centrepiece of your new bathroom, so you should spend a bit of time thinking about how it will contribute to the overall look of the space.

There are a number of sizes and shapes of cabinetry, depending on how much storage space you need and how it will fit into the room.

Stand-alone basins with a cupboard underneath can work well in a small bathroom, large vanities that include lighting, mirrors and lots of drawers are better for bigger rooms that service more people.

Shopping online or using the local paper to find second-hand models of cabinets that you can renovate yourself can be a great way to save money, however you may need to boost your knowledge of structural features to make sure you get a good deal.

You should also decide whether you'd like your bathroom furniture to match the rest of the house, or if you want it to make a different statement about your style.
