There are a few reasons you might want to drain your pool this winter, not the least of which is that it probably saw a fair few bodies making use of its refreshment over summer.

With sunscreen, dirt and evaporation all impacting the water - as well as simple ageing - the chemical makeup of your pool's contents can change, reducing its cleanliness and safety.

Winter is a great time to go about draining and replacing your pool water, as no one will be inconvenienced by not being able to have a dip.

Submersible pumps are essential for this kind of job and your local hire company may have a range of sizes for you to choose from, depending on the amount of water you will be dealing with.

States and territories have regulations governing the disposal of pool water, so it can be best to check where you can dump the used H2O.

Your pool manual should tell you how to connect the pump to the drainage system, but if you are unsure you should contact a pool contractor for advice.

Hiring equipment to drain your pool yourself will only be cost effective if the job is undertaken safely.
