Australia is fortunate to enjoy one of the sunniest, temperate climates in the world, and with rising energy costs, homeowners might want to look at embarking on green initiatives that capitalise on the sun's rays, while minimising living costs.

Installing a green roof on your home will help you reduce energy costs by adding insulation in winter and absorbing heat during the warmer months - potentially saving thousands on your power bills.

This type of roof, which originated in Germany and has risen in popularity across the US, uses a layer of soil on top of a building to grow different plants. Underneath the thin layer of soil - a lightweight substrate can be used as an alternative - is a fabric layer which covers a drainage system on top of waterproof cover to protect the roof.

Green roofs are not only cost effective, but they are friendly for the environment. Replacing a typical household roof with an eco-friendly green variety will absorb solar radiation and carbon dioxide.

Most green roofs in Australia use sedums as they are a resilient species, which are drought tolerant and require little maintenance.

Before embarking on your DIY green roof project, it is important to ascertain the angle of the roof. If over three degrees, it's recommended that you gain specialist advice.

Installing your new environmentally friendly roof will require an efficient drainage system. While the plants and substrate will absorb a considerable amount of water, any excess liquid will need to be drained off.

A drainage layer can be constructed from a coarse material such as gravel or shale, or alternatively you can use a plastic manufactured green roof drainage system.

As with any work that is carried out a height, it is important to use the right equipment to ensure your safety.

Depending on your roof type, using a scissor lift or cherry picker from your local Kennards Hire may be beneficial for working at heights.

Also available at Kennards Hire are safety harnesses and roof harness kits - giving you optimum protection and safety during your green roof DIY job.
