The French poet Victor Hugo once said: "A mother's arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them."

And while we may not all be endowed with the gift of gab like Mr Hugo, we can all agree that the sentiment is echoed around the world, by all who have - or know - a mother.

If your life has been affected by a good, old-fashioned warm-hearted lady you will want to make sure that May 13 holds something wonderful in store for her.

But with the busy lives we lead these days - and the odd hours that tradies sometimes keep to boot - it might be a challenge for you to come up with a great idea and put a plan into action.

Even though we may not be able to help you with the execution of your Mother’s Day treat we can certainly point out some great directions for you to consider.

For mums who love a bit of art and culture, the Woodend Winter Festival has lots to offer.

Technically, it’s not on Mother’s Day but Queens Birthday instead - June 8-11 - however surprise tickets to see her favourite piece of music, or a world-renowned performer could melt your mother’s heart anyway.

The Woodend schedule includes all kinds of events, both free and ticketed, including classical music recitals, art exhibitions and theatrical performances.

If you can tolerate that kind of thing, she’d probably be tickled pink that you came along with her.

A great night out at a fancy eatery could also go down a treat.

Sydney’s Quay was recently ranked among the best 50 restaurants in the world, so those with a passion for good food and making Mother’s Day memories could do well to book in early, as it’s sure to fill up fast for the occasion.

And for the lady who loves seventies rock, how about treating her a seat at the America concert in September?

Again, technically it won’t happen on Mother’s Day, but tickets go on sale on May 8 and they could go fast - acting quickly could mean the difference between getting her a place in the crown and missing out completely.

Otherwise, have a think about other events that are happening in your town around May 13 - spending a few quality hours of time with the mum in your life could be all she ever wanted!
