Overhauling your kitchen: Part 2 - Building a kitchen island

There are so many different designs and styles when it comes to rejuvenating your kitchen. And as one of the most popular rooms in a home, it is one that you want to give significant thought to.

Whether you want to keep your kitchen looking more traditional or you want to try some of the latest trends, there is something available to appeal to everyone's tastes - even if it is a bit of a combination of everything!

There are a lot of aspects to the kitchen, and following on from yesterday's tips on choosing the right benchtop, building your own island bench is something you might like to consider.

This DIY kitchen project is a great asset to the room - it provides additional bench and cupboard space and also serves as a central point of the kitchen. You can place stools around the island to enhance the atmosphere and give your kitchen more of a homely feel.

Starting with the cabinet kitchen island - you can make this or purchase stock cabinets if you find it easier - and place it in the middle of the room, or wherever you have decided your island will sit.

If you use stock cabinets, you may have to cut these down to size - using a circular saw from your local Kennards Hire will be beneficial for this job. You will also need to create a recessed toe kick around your island, a beadboard to the unfinished side of the cabinet and feet at its base.

You may want the countertop to match your other bench space, or you may wish your kitchen island to be the focus of the room - the decision is entirely yours!
