If you are embarking on a painting DIY job around the home, but are unsure what paint is the right variety for you - the following will give you an idea about the properties and uses of the most common paints on the market.

Water-based

Water-based paints include acrylic, vinyl or combination varieties are quick-drying, easy to use and are an overall effective paint to use around the home.

However, they are not suitable for use on all surfaces as they have poorer penetration and adhesion to some materials.

They also aren't suitable for rough surfaces as they don't hide imperfections so well. But they are cheaper than oil-based and also boast excellent colour and sheen retention.

Oil-based

Oil-based paints such as solvents and polyurethane-based varieties are more widely used in home renovation projects because of their high quality and diverse use.

Adhering to almost any surface, this type of paint offers a hard durable finish and is also stain resistant. They do have a longer drying time however.
