Painting your front door

When it comes to painting a house, there is often one part of the home that comes as an afterthought – the front door.

As the jewel in the crown of your DIY home, your front door is the first thing your visitors see when they arrive – and the last thing viewed when they leave.

Without having to incorporate an extensive decor, your front door is a great place to use bold colour and become a real focal point of your street.

Full gloss paints are becoming a popular option – but if DIY homeowners aren't quite ready for such a daring step, then black is also a choice guaranteed to get your house noticed.

A red door indicates passion and honesty, while orange indicates happiness and adventure.

Cooler tones such as blue can imply a sense of calm and purple gives an impression of extravagance and wealth.

When selecting a colour, keep in mind factors such as your existing handle, the colour of your home – or brickwork if there is any – and how holiday decorations such as a wreath may look against the new door.
