Winter project: Cubby house for the kids

With family excursions to the beach off the cards during this time of year, you might be going batty trying to come up with things to do with the kids.

For decades children have enjoyed the humble cubby house – having become a staple in many Australian backyards.

Whether it is something to entertain the children through the winter or a project you have been meaning to embark on for some time, combining some elbow grease with your DIY skills is all you need to construct a cubby.

Once you have the design sorted – there a number of resources available online – and your materials, you can make a start.

While you could go for a standard one room cubby, why not incorporate an added extra into the mix by elevating the structure off the ground to include a sandpit underneath?

The size of your cubby will determine the sandpit area – if large enough you may find hiring a mini loader helpful to excavate the area in preparation for the foundations and sand.

Essential equipment, including electric saws for cutting timber and nailing guns, is available at your local Kennards Hire.
