Winter-proof your gutters

Heavy downpours and strong winds can cause problems with a home's gutters and if you don't prepare them in advance, you may find yourself with a problem on your hands.

Clearing your gutters of debris and leaves is essential to prevent blockages and flooded eaves – and in severe cases, even flooded ceiling areas.

The best time to do this is before winter's onslaught of rain, however if you are a bit behind on your home maintenance you can still get the job done without the potential for catastrophe.

For the job, essential equipment will include extension ladders, gloves, a hose, safety harness, rope and bucket, and a gutter scraper.

Your local Kennards Hire can provide you with most of the equipment you require, including a cherry picker, which you may find useful if you have a multi-story home. A Certificate of Competency may be required for anyone using elevated work platforms above a certain height  – for more information, please check with staff when booking the equipment.

Falling is one of the biggest risks associated with any roof related job – ensuring you have a partner to assist you will enhance your safety and make the job easier.

Once you have access to your gutters, the job is relatively simple. Using tools such as a gutter scraper will help remove stubborn dirt and debris.

It is also a good idea to check the length of your hose before embarking on the project – there is nothing worse than realising you don't have enough reach to access all your gutters.
