City of Sydney tackling traffic congestion

The City of Sydney is working on a new plan to tackle traffic congestion and improve transport links throughout the city.

By 2036, the population of the NSW capital is expected to double and City of Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore asserts that 31 per cent more jobs are expected to be created over the next 25 years.

The City of Sydney, she explained, is one of the fastest-growing areas of the city and the population is expected to grow by 60 per cent during this period of time.

Already, the city struggles with congestion issues, Moore explained, adding that action needs to be taken now as a joint initiative by the city and state governments.

Announcing a new six-point plan to improve connections in the city, Moore noted that improving cycling paths, installing reliable light rail transport on George Street and better managing streets and parking will be among the focal points for addressing population growth.

She also asserted that more should be done to upgrade Sydney's key public transportation hubs, namely Wynyard, Town Hall, Circular Quay and Central stations to keep the flow of commuters moving and reduce congestion on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Elizabeth and George Streets.

As local councils - such as the City of Sydney - prepare to address congestion issues, hiring equipment such as traffic signs can help keep vehicles moving while roadworks and expansion projects are being carried out.
