Firstly, remember to use a coarse-grained sandpaper to remove old dirt, a worn finish and scratches, or remnants of glue or other adhesive marks.

A finer grain of sandpaper can be used next to smooth out the coarsely-sanded surface.

The finest grain of paper should be used to buff the surface and prepare it for sealing and refinishing - remember to buff with the grain, not against it, to provide the smoothest sheen.
