Making improvements to the bathroom is one of the best and most potentially lucrative renovations you can make to your home. Creating a more modern, pretty and comfortable environment in the bathroom will not only increase your quality of life, it could be the feature that clinches that elusive home buyer if you decide to sell your home somewhere down the line.
But, you might say, bathroom renovations often seem so complex and expensive. Why bother? In fact, you can do some easy and effective bathroom DIY if you decide to simply regrout your tiles following these three steps.
1. Remove the existing grout
There are a variety of tools you can use from this, from a toothed grit-edge cutting blade or oscillating power tool to grout saw or utility knife. Simply pry out the grout between the tiles, then vacuum up the dust and wash the surface with a water and white vinegar mixture. Be careful not to scratch or chip the tiles, or apply too much pressure and knock them loose.
2. Regrout the tiles
First find a grout and sealer that match the current grout colour. You can either get pre-mixed grout or, for larger areas, mix it yourself using the helpful instructions on the container. Use a trowel to apply them in the joints, then use a rubber float to squeeze the grout in.
Wait 30 minutes for it to set, then apply circular strokes with a wet sponge to wipe off excess grout. Try and keep the amount of grout consistent across the tiles.
3. Seal the deal
After two days, your grout should be cured. That means you can now apply the sealer to the seams to prevent it from staining. Use a small paintbrush for the best accuracy. If you get some on the tile surface, be sure to immediately wipe it off with a damp rag.
