Hot temperatures, rainfall and other environmental factors can cause the tiles on your roof to weather. If you leave too long between maintenance checks, this can eventually result in leaks.

So, could now be the perfect time to climb up a cherry picker and examine the state of your roof? Here are a few tips and tricks to make the experience even easier.

    Take all precautions

If you have any doubts or fears about climbing to great heights, a harness should allay these by protecting you when you're up high.

Scaffolding could also make sure you cover all your health and safety bases. This is the best way to safely reach those tiles on the edge of your roof.

When you are working on a roof, you should always ensure you have a buddy. He or she can spot you to make sure you are kept safe, and will be there to assist should you find yourself in any unexpected trouble.

You should also make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing for the job. Items that are too loose can get caught and be troublesome.

Rubber shoes are best to help you avoid slipping and you should also wear a hat and sunscreen if you are going to be out in the elements for a long period of time.

    Watch out for hazards

You might not think about it down on the ground, but tree branches and antenna as well as electrical cables can get in the way. It is important to always keep an eye out for these obstacles as the consequences of a trip or fall can be significant.

Here are some of the DIY problems you could encounter when retiling your roof

Some people find they do not fasten the tiles securely, so they are therefore at a higher risk of blowing off.

It is also important to select the right tiles for the environment, and if you are only replacing a few tiles that have come loose, make sure you choose some that will blend with the existing ones covering your roof. The colour is as important as the thickness and the size.

Make sure you take all your measurements before you head out to purchase the tiles as you want to ensure you have enough to cover the entire roof.

And, before you begin tiling, make sure you sort out the tiles by colour and thickness variance.
