Dismantling sheds at an operational power station is a complex process. And that’s the challenge that was faced by Trent Carloss, Senior Project Manager Central Australia, McMahon Services.
In order to make the process safer and more efficient, Trent hired a boom lift and excavator with a rock breaker attachment from Kennards Hire Alice Springs.
Trent explained that the scope of works involved the removal of four generator sets, a reciprocating engine and three gas turbines. It also required demolition of the three sheds that housed the turbines.
“The power station is in Tennant Creek, 500km north of Alice Springs,” said Trent. “The generators were placed on concrete plinths approximately one metre high, which was broken up by the excavator with a hydraulic breaker attachment so it could easily be removed.
Ideal for a range of excavation projects including trenches, pool excavations and footings, the tracked excavator is a powerful machine that is very manoeuvrable and enables work to be completed in areas with limited access.
“The sheds that housed the generators were fitted with large exhaust systems and air intakes. The boom lift from Kennards Hire enabled the riggers to access and facilitate the breakdown and safe removal of the loads,” he said.
With its 4 wheel drive and oscillating steer axle, the boom lift is well suited to undertaking facilities maintenance, factory fit-outs, painting and signwriting as well as completing tree lopping, and overhead lighting and plumbing installation or maintenance works.
