Landscaping around a pool

Many homeowners may wish to extend their DIY garden to also include landscaping around the pool in their backyard.

Often left untouched, the area around such a large feature in the backyard can accentuate such a focal point.

One of the challenges faced in landscaping around a pool area is the difficulty in softening the harder features present - such as paving or decking - while trying to create some privacy at the same time.

A common mistake made by DIY gardeners is to include a high amount of debris in the surrounding garden beds - this can often find its way into the pool, clogging the filter and leading to unnecessary cleaning.

Instead of using organic mulch, DIY gardeners may consider use pebbles, river rock or small stones - these will stay in place while also helping to prevent weeds.

While you may not have the space - or the budget - to plant a luxurious palm tree by the pool, smaller plants can still be used to accent the area.

Taro palms - also known as elephant ear - offer a nice alternative to the traditional variety while still maintaining a leafy green aesthetic.

Dwarf conifers and bird of paradise plants will also survive well near chlorinated water.
