Queensland plumbing laws overhauled

Tradies are faced with a number of red tape issues, whether it be workplace regulations or approval processes - all of which can cost workers both time and money.

The Queensland government recognises the challenges that face plumbers, introducing new laws to simplify work within the sector.

Announcing the reforms yesterday (November 1), state housing and public works minister Bruce Flegg said the changes will mean plumbers and drainers can perform more work in the sector without the need for local government permits or mandatory inspections.

"Previously, plumbing work such as a bathroom or kitchen renovation would have to go through local government approval and inspection processes which could cost up to $1,600 and take up to 20 business days just for permits and inspections," Mr Flegg explained.

"From today (November 1), plumbers and drainers simply need to notify the Plumbing Industry Council within ten business days of completing this type of work and it will cost $25 for an electronic lodgement or $35 for a manual lodgement."

Queensland plumbers and drainers are likely to welcome the changes, which will make routine work within the sector faster and cheaper - benefiting both professionals and customers.

Mr Flegg said the reforms are expected to save Queenslanders up to $25 million on plumbing application fees each year on kitchen and bathroom renovations.
