Renovating your bathroom: Part 1 - How to remove old floor tiles

Whether it is that you have recently purchased a new home or you have noticed your bathroom is looking a bit tired, a bathroom DIY job is bound to be on the cards at some stage.

The good news is there are a number of different tasks you can undertake to give your bathroom a fresh new look, including - but certainly not limited to - replacing the fittings, installing a new vanity, painting the walls and ripping out your old shower for a modern replacement.

An effective and achievable way of revamping your bathroom is replacing the floor tiling - all you need is a bit of elbow grease, know-how and the right equipment.

The first and potentially the most challenging part of this DIY job is removing your existing bathroom tiles. To do this you will need to break up the existing tile and the bonding agent that fixes it to the substrate. 

Removing ceramic tiles can be a tough job, but a jackhammer with a wide chisel or a spading hammer can assist you with the task. 

Using a floor stripper, available from your local Kennards Hire, will quickly and efficiently remove old linoleum or vinyl tiles - leaving you with a professional result.

Once you have removed your old tiling, you can decide on a fresh new look! You may want to stay with the more traditional ceramic tiles, but experiment with a different colour and tile size.

Alternatively natural stone is a modern style that is gaining popularity with its home spa look. Usually made from granite, this option is both extremely durable and aesthetically pleasing.
