Does your house need a spruce up? Outdated wallpaper and dull colours can make a house appear drab and dreary - so why not switch things up by trying a new colour? Whether you want to revamp your entire room or simply try something new with one area here are some tips for beginners to ensure your paint job looks immaculate.

Once you've read through the how-to, it's time to decide on a colour. Colours can have a huge effect on your mood, so we've listed a few hues and how they make you feel - then it's up to you which seems most appealing!

    Orange

Evoking excitement and energy in those who enter the room, orange is a great colour to welcome guests. The right shade used in shared spaces such as lounges, kitchens and entry halls can not only brighten up the place visually but also lift your emotions.

    Yellow

An excellent communicator of happiness and guaranteed to brighten up any room, yellow is brilliant for sun rooms, kitchens and areas that you want to highlight and fill with light. Be warned, though, yellow can be a little overpowering to say the least - so very light hues are recommended unless you are using it as an accent.

    Blue

Blue is a calming colour. It boosts production and encourages creativity, making it the perfect choice for work areas. You may also wish to use blue in your bathrooms and bedrooms in order to evoke serenity and peacefulness in the areas which you rest. This colour is also related to suppressing appetite, so avoid using in the dining room!

    Green

A combination of the cheerfulness of yellow and the refreshing feel of blue, green is a wonderfully calming colour bringing balance and reducing stress. A brilliant option for kitchens and dining rooms due to its connection with food and nature, green works in any areas where you want to encourage harmony.

    White

Tired of the clutter and business of your home? Fancy a blank canvas? White provides a calm and fresh feeling that can be incredibly appealing to anyone who has been surrounded by dodgy 60s wallpaper for much too long. A great start point to fill a room with accent colours that can be switched out as life goes on, white provides you with a feeling of cleanliness and purity - and who doesn't want that?
