Reviving timber floors

Over time, timber flooring can be marked and scratched due to wear and tear, but the good news is that it doesn't have to stay this way!

If there are big gouges through the floor you may need to recruit the services of a professional, but for simple marring, all you need is a few essentials and some elbow grease.

There are several different finishes for timber floors, so it is important that you identify what type you have in your home.

If your floor is waxed and has only got surface scratches then reapplying some solvent-based wax may do the job!

Most timber flooring is varnished or finished with polyurethane or shellac - if this is the case with yours, then you will need to embark on some floor sanding.

Use a fine grade sandpaper to remove the scratches - it is important that you don't use a heavy variety as this will strip too much off the timber.

Once you have completed the sanding you can refinish the floor matching it with the original varnish.
