Painting your home is undoubtedly one of the cheapest and easiest ways to make a significant change. For instance, at the extreme end of the scale, imagine a home that was painted hot pink?

But it's more than that. Complete Home asserts that adding a fresh lick of paint to your home is one of the most cost-effective ways to add value to your property. This is likely dependent on you painting it the right colour - of course, hot pink could have the opposite effect.

What's more, in a study from the University of South Australia, Dr John Pockett found that some paint in the right place can significantly reduce your total annual electricity bill for heating and cooling.

"Going from a dark to light-coloured roof can decrease your annual energy costs by 4-8 per cent," he said.

If you're looking to do a bit of DIY painting, there is likely to be a number of tools and equipment required - fortunately, Kennards Hire has what you need. Have a look below at some of the gear we have on offer to make your job easier.

    Paint and wallpaper removal

If only it was as easy as simply painting over what you already have! If you want the finish to be smooth, without defects and looking like a professional did it, you should remove the current coat, regardless of whether it's paint or wallpaper.

To assist you in this venture, Kennards offers a variety of heat guns that produce extreme heat enabling them to melt paint, which makes it easy work for a scraper. In terms of power options, DIYers can choose from electric, gas or infra red.

If you've got wallpaper, never fear, as we have all your DIY painting needs covered. We can provide you with wallpaper remover that is fast and efficient, using steam to peel off all papers, even vinyl.

    Sanders

Once you've removed the bulk of the previous coating, an electric sander can finish the job and give you a nice smooth blank slate to begin painting on.

Kennards Hire has a plethora of options, from heavy-duty belt sanders to Fein oscillating triangular sanders. Discuss your needs with the team at Kennards Hire to determine the right tool for your project.

    Ladders

Often when it comes to DIY painting, you will be forced to reach up to finicky areas, which is where a ladder comes in handy. Fortunately Kennards has an extensive range, scaling from 0.9 metres to 10.7 metres.

For general home-painting needs, a two-stage extension ladder should cover your needs, as it is built from durable aluminium and lightweight. You can also retract it when not in use for easy storage or transport.

Are you working in the vicinity of electric outputs? If so, then it's recommended you go for a fibre glass ladder. Like its aluminium counterpart, it is portable and sturdy, but its real selling feature is that it doesn't conduct electricity.

If you need to clamber onto the roof (especially if you want to reduce your power bill with lighter paint) you should go for a specifically designed roof ladder. They have wheels so that you can roll it to the top of the roof, with a hook so that you can secure it.

When painting, it's likely that you're going to be standing in an elevated position for a long period of time, and as such it's highly recommended that you use a platform ladder. These have a large area for you to place your feet when painting a house, reducing the stress on your limbs - these are very popular among painters, electricians and decorators.

    Spray painting

Spray painters are a great way to speed up the process. We have a range of options, including:

    Airless sprayers

    • Professional sprayer that uses extreme pressure instead of compressed air
    • Allows large areas to be painted very quickly, efficiently and with minimal over spray
    • Popular for whole house painting - both exterior and interior
    • Adjustable pressure, and is easy to use once you get the hang of it!

    Low-pressure sprayers

    • Perfect for applying paint and varnishes to smaller areas, such as furniture and fencing
    • High-quality finish with an even coat
    • Lightweight and very easy to use

We also offer high-pressure-compressed air sprayers that are more suited for professional automotive, machinery and furniture purposes.

    Trestles

Similar to the role of the step ladder, trestles used in conjunction with scaffolding planks will provide you with a safe and comfortable work platform to stand on in high places.

They're constructed from aluminium so they're very light and manoeuvrable, and range from 1.8 metres to 4.8 metres.

    Heat lamps

If you find yourself battling time pressures similar to what the contestants on The Block face, you can employ the services of a heat lamp setup to ensure the paint cures as fast as possible.

The heat lamps have adjustable height and angle settings, which can help create a stable environment for your paint to set. After all, there are not many things more boring than watching paint dry!
