Good foundations are the key to any successful project, and when you're choosing to build a beautiful new garden, you'll want to make sure that the plants have a great chance to grow.

There are a few things you should look out for when tackling the installation of a new garden, whether you have existing boxes and beds or you're starting from scratch. From hidden stumps to solid construction, below is a list to keep in mind:

    1) Check the ground for that cheeky buried stump

When new species are planted, they need to take hold and grow strong roots. That means allowing space below the visible section of the plants, which can sometimes be taken up by a large, hidden enemy: a dead tree stump.

Preparing your section for a garden means removing these and filling the area left behind with good soil. But how do you go about that? You hire a stump grinder from Kennards Hire. A four-stroke motor will ensure your hardened ground-stealers are no match and you can reclaim the wasted space.

If you're planting waratahs, for example, you'll need around 45 centimetres of space below the surface for solid roots as well as great drainage and aeration. Removing a tree stump will allow for all of these things and the cultivation of lovely, bright red flowers.

    2) Ensure your planter boxes are sturdy!

You don't want to come out to your garden, which you worked so hard on two years ago, and see one of your planter boxes leaning to one side, or bulging out of the middle, right? Well then making sure that they have deep, strong foundations is key.

The weight of soil and water will put a strain on the wooden foundations and can cause bending. To avoid this, make sure you use Kennards Hire's one-person hole borers, which will make drilling strong holes for your posts and foundations easy and independent.

Follow these basic steps to give your new garden the best chance of success.
