Building a deck in time for spring

With spring just around the corner, our social activities around the home will slowly retreat outdoors as the warm weather returns.

There is just over a month of winter left so it might be a good idea to embark on a garden DIY job to make sure your backyard is looking its best in time for the warmer weather.

An outdoor deck makes a great spot for entertaining friends and family, providing shelter from the elements, while also giving that outdoorsy feel.

Building your own timber deck doesn't have to be a challenge and there are plenty of resources online that can give you an idea of the different styles there are.

Before you hit the shops, it is a good idea to work out your budget. This will give you an idea of the size and type of deck within your financial scope - giving you an exact list of what materials you will need.

Depending on where you live and the legislation in your area, it is a good idea to contact your local council to find out if there are any guidelines which you have to abide by. This is particularly true for residents who live in bushfire-prone areas.

Before you start building, make a list of all the equipment you will need for the job and make a trip to your local Kennards Hire store!
