Create the perfect resort-worthy retreat in your back garden

Do you want to create a slice of luxury at home? It may be easier than you think. A bit of DIY landscaping could be all you need to create a slice of paradise and relaxation in your garden.

Here are some tips for the perfect resort-themed garden, right at home.

Colour

To create that beautiful tropical feel that will have you believing you're on holiday every day, it is essential to use brightly coloured foliage where possible.

Consider bright canna lilies, ornamental ginger and hibiscus to provide that holiday atmosphere. Remember that by planting trees or shrubs with contrasting shapes and textures next to each other you can create a sense of interest and drama.

Often designers will plant in odd numbers, as three or more plants can create just the right tone.

To contrast these bright colours, fences could be painted in shades of beige so that the foliage can take centre stage, drawing the eye in.

Stone

Resorts often use stone tiling and cladding to create a natural vibe. White stones look great, but granite and sandstone can also be used for more dramatic effect.

Pergola

Adding a pergola can add to the relaxed tropical feel of your back garden. This provides the perfect chill out area, particularly if you add some sun loungers, or even a hammock underneath.

These can be left in their natural wooden state (although they will need to be weather proofed) or you could refresh them with a paint job.

Water feature

For urban bliss, you cannot go past a water feature for its relaxation qualities.

Remember, nearly all resorts boast one of these, whether it be a fountain, Koi pond or a swimming grotto.

No matter what kind of water feature you opt for, make sure you take all precautions with your submersible pump!

Once you have it in place, it is important to change the water regularly and give it a good clean out to prevent contamination. You may also need to disconnect the power if you do not plan on using it for an extended period of time.

Lighting

Once your resort-theme garden is up and running, you may find yourself spending more time in the great outdoors. If this is the case, lighting may well be a priority.

LED lights are a great choice as they are robust and durable, as well as being a weatherproof option able to withstand any conditions.
