With warm weather upon us, now is the perfect time to get busy in the backyard and challenge yourself with a garden DIY project.

Whether you are an experienced green thumb or novice planter, gardening can accommodate everyone's skill level, and it’s a fun and rewarding activity too!

Flowers come alive in spring, so why not head down to your local gardening centre and select some new plants to add a burst of colour into your garden?

While it is always a good idea to select flowers that are suitable to your specific conditions, there are a number of plants that flourish in most spring climates across the country.

Here's a list of our favourites to get you thinking.

Crab apple - This is a beautiful spring blossom that will add a pop of colour in your backyard. It also offers edible fruit in autumn!

Prunus Blireana Cherry (cherry blossom) - Perfect for any spring garden, this deciduous tree will reward you with fragrant pink flowers. It is also well suited to smaller gardens.

Aquilegia - This vibrant purple flower will instantly brighten your garden. It also self-sows, so you'll enjoy this plant next year too!

Sunflower - This bright yellow flower makes a beautiful addition to any spring garden. Growing up to three metres tall, planting a few of these will make a real statement in your backyard!
