When girls head out for a night on the town, they can often be heard saying something along the lines of "I'm just putting on my war paint!".

They of course are talking about applying their make-up, using it to give themselves a new look.

But it works the other way around too.

You can in fact, give your home a makeover using paint and a few simple tips picked up from the fashion world, and the girls who take two hours getting ready!

    Dramatise

Let's start with mascara, eyeshadow and lipstick. All of these objects in makeup are used to dramatise an area on the face - so how can this work for your home?

Use bold colours in the same way. If you have an interesting or attractive feature in your home - even if it's just a feature wall, a staircase or an arched ceiling - you can draw the eye to these features with a strong paint colour.

    Perfect

Another favourite for the makeup artists is primer and foundation. These terms cross straight over to the paint world.

In makeup, they're used to hide imperfections, just as they are in your home.

A matte paint will make any bumps or nicks obvious, so opt for a high or semi-gloss paint to diffuse the light on your walls and mask these imperfections.

    Illuminate

Another trick is to use lighter shades of paint to make small spaces larger. Makeup artists use this one on the inner eye to give that 'wide-eyed' look, and you can do the same thing in the home by selecting a lighter hue for darker areas around the house.

    Details

And what are the last two things a girl does before she heads out the door?

First, she will accessorise. Show off that great paint job with some extra touches like soft furnishings such as curtains or cushions to finish the look.

Finally, a spray of perfume and you're set. In the home, this could be a scent diffuser or simply a bouquet of fresh flowers.

Brushes, palettes and artists: These are all synonymous with makeup just as much as they are with paints - and now you know why!
