With only one week to go, the Kennards for Kids campaign has been running throughout March and April, raising $2 for every hire in-store or online for a partner charity around Australia and New Zealand. The annual campaign hopes to improve the lives of our most vulnerable children by working with charities that positively and directly impact their communities.

"In 2016, Kidsafe NT used the funds raised by the Kennards for Kids initiative to purchase child car restraints and to bolster our community outreach program."

In the Northern Territory, Kennards Hire is partnering with Kidsafe NT with the hopes of achieving the same positive impact we have made in past years.

"Previously, Kidsafe NT used the funds raised by the Kennards for Kids initiative to purchase child car restraints and to bolster our community outreach program," said Kidsafe NT CEO Kellie Shewring.

"We also visited two Indigenous communities - Groot Eylandt and Booraloola - and taught the locals how to fit child restraints into cars with the intention of improving safety parameters for the children living there. I think it's fabulous that Kennards Hire focuses on children's charities - there's so much to do in the world today and the fact that they pick a charity in need [from each state] shows that they are hands-on and helping out in a very real and visible way."

What does Kidsafe NT help the community with?

Kidsafe NT supports the Territory community by working with local support groups, refugee assistance groups, early childhood agencies, child protection, local councils and the government to improve safety education for children. When people are educated about safety risks to children, our most vulnerable young people can be safer.

The organisation focuses on five key areas of support in the community:

    • Households (for burns and scalds),
    • Roads,
    • Schools,
    • Playgrounds, and
    • Water.

The aim is to prevent child deaths from accidents and unintentional injury, hence the need for car restraint education in some remote areas of the Northern Territory. This directly impacts the lives of kids because their parents know how to properly protect them in the car. In the event of a road collision, a child in a proper safety restraint will have the best chance of escaping unscathed.

Kidsafe NT wants to drastically reduce the number of child deaths and hospitalisations caused by unintentional injury every year. There are 280 child deaths and 60,000 hospitalisations each year, and sufficient education is all families need to stop their children being hurt in many instances.

As much as 75 per cent of all child deaths are caused by drowning at home, car crashes, crossing the road, and house fires. By providing the necessary funds to Kidsafe NT, the organisation will be able to directly impact the lives of community kids through education and advocacy.
