If you are looking to get into some DIY over the coming months, there are some things you may want to take into consideration in order to get the results you want.

Here are four mistakes many DIY-ers make - and how you can avoid them.

    1. Getting started - without the right tools

We understand getting started on any DIY project can be an exciting time and you are going to want to get going as soon as possible! However, it's important to make sure you have the right tools from the beginning to avoid any hiccups along the way. Make a list of all the tools you are going to need for each step, and have those set aside and ready to use.

    2. Dodgy working conditions

We've all heard the phrase "safety first" and when getting stuck into any DIY project, it's important that you remember these two simple words. Create a safe environment for not only yourself but anyone else who may wander into your work zone when you are using power tools, ladders and other materials that have the potential to be dangerous. Ensure you read the manual when using power tools, that you switch on all safety locks on your ladder, keep lids on liquids and materials when you aren't using them and store them out of reach from prying hands!

You should also ensure that all electrical wiring or power points are covered at all times, and cords are safely tucked out of the way - the last thing you want is to trip and fall before you've even got started! If at any stage you are unsure, consult a professional. It's better to be safe than sorry, and this could also save you a lot of money.

    3. Not obtaining the right permit

Whenever you make big changes to your home or garden, it's important to speak with the council to check whether you require a permit. They can advise you of any steps to take that could prevent any issues arising in future. Although the Internet is a useful tool to find out about DIY and permit information, always follow it up with professional advice. It's better to be safe than sorry, and you'll find comfort in the knowledge that all your hard work won't have to be removed in a few weeks time!

    4. Buying instead of hiring

We've all been there - got carried away in the excitement of it all and bought up a whole of expensive power tools that we'll use once and then abandon in the shed for the rest of eternity. Save yourself some money, and space in the shed, by hiring the tools you need. Kennards has a wide selection of small power tools, bobcats and cherry pickers - plus whatever else you need to get the job done!
