In recognition of National Tradie Day on 19 September, new research commissioned by Kennards Hire reveals just how much Australians value the hard work and skills of tradies — yet also shows that tradies are still underappreciated and under-recognised across the country.
The findings are clear:
- 93% of Australians believe tradies don't get the recognition they deserve
- 96% agree tradies should be recognised as essential workers on par with nurses and teachers
- 90% support initiatives that highlight the vital role tradies play in their local communities and across Australia
Despite this overwhelming public support, Australia continues to experience a critical skills shortage in the trades sector — a shortage that threatens everything from new home builds to maintaining essential infrastructure.
Nathan Venables, Chief Operations Officer at Kennards Hire, said "Tradies are the unsung heroes of Australia and New Zealand, keeping our homes safe, infrastructure strong, and businesses running. Our research confirms that while these skilled workers are relied upon every day, their contributions often go unrecognised and unsupported."
He added, "With skills shortages growing, it's never been more important to celebrate tradies and the incredible work they do. National Tradie Day is the perfect opportunity to do just that — to genuinely thank tradies and shine a spotlight on their impact."
The research also highlights how integral tradies are to daily Australian life:
- Nearly 73% of Australians have called on a tradie for a job at short notice
- Over 63% credit tradies with helping them avoid costly mistakes through their skills and advice
- 88% say knowing a tradie brings peace of mind when things go wrong
