In the hire industry, shifting away from reliance on fossil fuels is becoming increasingly important. The way energy is used on worksites is changing, driven by rising fuel costs and growing demand for lower emissions solutions that do not compromise on performance. Kennards Hire is focused on where we can make the biggest immediate impact on site, starting with reducing diesel use, cutting noise and lowering carbon emissions.

The importance of lowering diesel use

When it comes to fuel, reducing diesel use is a priority. Across Australia and New Zealand, industries are facing growing pressure to transition from traditional diesel through electrification, low carbon fuels and more efficient internal combustion engines. Yet for many worksites, diesel remains critical for reliable operations and will continue to play a role for the foreseeable future.

Fuel price volatility is another key factor. As costs fluctuate, fuel efficiency is not just an environmental priority, it is a commercial imperative. This poses the challenge: how do you reduce emissions and fuel costs without sacrificing performance?

    Our work so far

Kennards Hire is actively supporting the reduction of diesel consumption through innovative solutions and sustainability initiatives. We’ve integrated electric, hybrid and solar across many of our equipment categories, enabling us to supply efficient, high-quality equipment options that reduce our customers’ environmental footprint. For example, over 85% of our access equipment operates using electricity without compromising on quality of output. These solutions are not only cleaner and quieter, but also more cost-effective to run.

    Infrastructure

We made a significant shift towards the supply of sustainable options for large-scale infrastructure projects with our Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport rail project. We used four generators with B20 biodiesel to meet the requirements of CPB Contractors United Infrastructure Joint Venture (CPBUI JV).

    Construction

Kennards Hire enables construction companies to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel costs on sites with POWR2’s POWRBANK battery energy storage solution (BESS). With the POWRBANK, our customers have seen up to a 70% reduction in diesel consumption and CO2 emissions on construction sites. The POWRBANK seamlessly integrates with our existing diesel gensets where it handles the load, with the generator kicking in when needed to recharge the battery. Combining battery and diesel technology provides a cleaner, quieter and more efficient short-term power solution.

Choosing hybrid power systems over conventional diesel generators can significantly reduce fuel consumption. For example, switching from a conventional 15kVA diesel generator to an Integrated Hybrid Power System (15kVA / 20kWh + 4kW solar) can reduce fuel consumption by up to 63% per week.*

    Energy

For Victoria’s largest solar farm in Goorambat East, we supplied sustainable solutions to meet a generation capacity of 40 megawatts – enough to power 30,000 homes. We supplied 80kVA BESS battery units with a 44kW solar array and diesel generator for back up, plus hybrid generators. We also supplied trailer-mounted fuel and water tanks, cable drum trailers and site lighting, making Kennards Hire the single point of contact for all the customer’s requirements on the build.

    How Kennards Hire helps

We provide a variety of sustainable solutions across a broad range of product categories, including:

    • Hybrid and battery-powered power systems
    • Solar-ready solutions and energy-efficient site infrastructure
    • Low-emission equipment and machinery

Our sustainable equipment range to support every stage of delivery includes:

    • Power generation and energy storage
    • Site offices, amenities and modular buildings
    • Earthmoving, access and materials-handling equipment
    • Tools, specialist gear and project-specific solutions

We are seeing that the most effective approach on site is, rather than eliminating diesel, using it more efficiently alongside hybrid, battery and low-emission solutions. At Kennards Hire, we’re working with customers every day to help reduce diesel consumption, lower emissions and improve efficiency across their projects.
