b'KENNARDS HIRE Since 1948TAKING HIRE HIGHER | 10NEVILLE KENNARDThe oldest of the second generation, Neville John Kennard was born in Sydney in 1937. Nevs educational background began with public schooling, then All Saints College in Bathurst, and finally Shore School in North Sydney. He decided against tertiary education, instead joining his fathers hire business at nineteen. Nev tapped into Walters vision and built on it, beginning theprocess that would help shape it into what it has become today. Nev cited his lack of tertiary education as a key factor to his success, believing learning was a lifetime challenge, not something that happened in four years in an institution. He boasted he had nothad his common sense knocked out of him by over-education.He was a shrewd entrepreneur with a knack for sniffing outopportunities, and he launched several business ideas. The business began to grow, and his desire to keep it in the family promptedhim a few years later to get in touch with his brother, Andy, who was overseas, and convince him to come in as a partner.Neville was a learner at heart and loved to travel overseas to bring back new ideas to Australia. He was a bit of a rabble-rouser with ahealthy disrespect for authority, and wasnt afraid to bend the rules if he thought he could get away with itespecially if he thought they were rules for the sake of rules. Nev was not a fan of bureaucracy. One story goes that when hed had a few to drink at the 1973 Hire Convention in Melbourne and discovered he couldnt get home due to airport strikes, he and a few of his table mates did what came Sceptical thinking, contrary thinking, challenging the conventional wisdom, being curious, may bring you back to the conventional wisdom, or it may not; but at least youve arrived there of your own accord and not just followed the crowd.
