b'CHAPTER 03THE KENNARD BROTHERS | 17On 12 October 1968, the inaugural Hire Convention was held atthe Hotel Metropole in Sydney. It marked the first opportunity for many operators and their staff to network and socialise, and it was celebrated as a great success. At the 1972 Hire Convention in Terrigal, Sam Greenberg was the guest of honour, with around 100 other American rental professionals also in attendance.Sam gave a speech titled 101 Ways to Make Money in theRental Business. The following day, Nev had planned a boat trip on the harbour. While the Americans had dressed to impress for what they expected to be an extravagant outing, they were taken aback upon finding an old steel vessel bobbing in the cold wind. Nevertheless, they endured the uncomfortable trip with good humour. The Hire Association of New South Waless official publication, , was launched in April 1968. In its second issue, Andy shared Hirehis discoveries from his travels to the US and Britain, particularly industry-leading advances. He highlighted the significance of concepts such as a place for everything and everything in its place, a clean-floor policy, neat displays, choosing to buy new equipment rather than used, and emphasising employee training. Many of the pointers Andy provided back then still influence the company now.No matter how clean the equipment or how well displayed, there must be good housekeeping, he wrote. Both store and yard must be swept dailymore if requiredpapers and litter removed, [and]dirt from machine-cleaning removed immediately. This mantra has been upheld to this day, with Kennards Hire personnel keeping an eye out for any anything out of place. Kennards staff note that whenever Andy visits a branch and sees a piece of litter on the ground, he will pick it up himself and deposit it in a bin.Above Kennards Hire rate card, 1969.'
